Over the Valentines Day/Presidents Day Weekend, I am planning a trip with my girlfriend to drive from LA to Monterey via the PCH, and then spend some time in San Fran before returning back via the PCH again (tentative plans). I am still quite the tourist but I at least wanted to get a sweet ride that was not a typical rental Camaro or Mustang. Since my budget is limited, I have turned to Turo (formerly known as Relay Rides) to find something cool. After much searching, I have reserved a 2012 Mini Cooper S (hardtop).

And guess what? IT’S A MANUAL! I will certainly find time for some canyon carving outside of HWY 1 as well.

Www.turo.com (used to be relayrides.com)

The best way I could describe it is like Airbnb but for cars. People rent out their own personal cars. It is more of a car sharing program than car rental. Meaning I will not be thrashing the car since an actual person owns it lol. Dunno who would ever want to subject their car to rental, but I definitely will pick the guy’s brain about it a bit.

Wrong_Wheel_Drive_NOT rents a front wheel drive car. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, MAN.

No but really, these cars are a riot. I’ve had some wheel time in a John Cooper Works supercharged Mini and it was one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven. Have fun!

If you’re driving between Monterey and San Francisco I recommend the 17 between Santa Cruz and San Jose. It’s fast and twisty.

Oh yeah if you ever go on the 101 between Salinas and Pismo beach, do not speed. King City CHP swarms all over.

I'm just happy it's not an automatic. It could be one wheel random drive for all I care lol. I'm hoping I forget about the wrong wheel drive aspect and just enjoy the drive. I've actually never driven another manual outside of my Miata so it will be interesting to see how it differs.

I'm not really for speeding much. At least not in straight lines, I will gladly use excessive speed in some corners. But on the freeway just setting the cruise to a reasonable speed and relaxing is where it's at.

Excellent. Definitely will do. More freeway I can avoid, the better.

I would also add that if you can, try to hit it when the sun is coming up. It’s absolutely beautiful with the trees and the empty road.

This is probably the thing that turns me off most about the service. Every person has different standards for how a car should be driven.

Check weather and traffic before you take 17. One wreck and it could become a parking lot.

Ive gotta make it a point to actually wake up and enjoy something like that! Its so easy to just say "im on vacation" and never wake up early.

The 84 is also good, but it’s one lane each way. Between Menlo Park and somewhere south of Half Moon Bay. Take a look on the Google maps.

sweet, added it to my ongoing google maps route! It fits on the way from Monterey to San Fran with a minor detour.

The roads over the golden gate are excellent. Would recommend going Stinson Beach for lunch or something. The roads hug the mountain side along the pacific. The roads around Marin county are all great no matter which one you choose.
